Your initial consultation will assess whether treatment is appropriate and involves a full case history of the symptoms and information on lifestyle and diet. This is followed by a physical examination, using highly developed palpation skills and observing some simple movements to help identify points of weakness and diagnose the likely causes of the presenting symptoms.
The treatment plan will be tailored to the individual and will include osteopathic manual techniques and medical acupuncture as well as advice on pain management, life style and exercises. Dietary advice can be given when appropriate and requested.
Treatment will only commence after the initial examination and a diagnosis has been formed. Occasionally, other forms of medical tests and investigations may be required to rule out serious or potentially serious conditions.
New patients are allocated 45 minutes to 1 hour for a first consultation.
The course of treatment varies with each condition: commonly it might be once a week to begin with, then at longer intervals as the condition responds. Typically a course of treatment lasts for 3 to 8 sessions, but this can take longer with more long- standing complaints. Follow up appointments are normally between 30-40 minutes.
If there is no response after 4 sessions then other treatment options will be discussed, which may involve referral to a Medical Practitioner or for further tests and investigations.
Please note as Osteopathy and Medical Acupuncture deals with musculoskeletal complaints and requires hands-on assessment and treatment, some degree of undressing will be essential. You will always be protected with towels, but we suggest wearing appropriate clothing, and those who wish to are welcome to bring someone with them.
